About the Event

Our newest teacher Sheri Winklemann, has a passion for Shakespeare.

We have learned that Shakespeare has the same rhythmic petameter as Hip-Hop. Because of this we created a class specifically catered to this. Shakespeare is a huge part of acting, so learn how to do it correctly!

This will be a fun and exciting interactive 3 hour workshop in which participants begin with an intro into the work of Shakespeare, the world of Elizabethan England, and the plays that he wrote then. Examples of the timeless themes that he used that still live today - and examples of famous modern films and plays that took their plot lines from Shakespeare will be discussed. An intro into the colorful, dynamic, heightened musical language Shakespeare used will be given, and participants will have a chance to play with some bawdy insults that Shakespeare famously created, and make up some of their own to get a sense of the language, in a fun way.

We will then explore the magical parallels of Shakespeare’s iambic pentameter language and the musical beat structure of Hip Hop and its striking similarities. We will explore the art of storytelling that both art forms use through heightened rhythmic language, meter, wordplay, as well as themes that are common in both art forms. Participants will have a chance to see some of Shakespeare’s most famous monologues performed to Hip Hop beats and try them out for themselves. Participants will be guided to create a story using both elements of Shakespeare and Hip Hop music. We will conclude with a fun exercise where participants will try to identify phrases - and determine if it was written by Shakespeare or a Hip Hop artist.

The Goal of the Workshop is to provide a foundation to compare the timeless art of rhythmic language and its universal nature.

Shakespeare and Hip-Hop stretch and shape the usage of the English language with their specific imagery and rhythm to tell a story in one of the most powerful ways.
